The Light Within

One night I saw a cluster of fireflies, and their light was a beautiful reminder that there is no death, only everlasting light for the one who truly knows God. I sometimes wish we as humans could shine our lights as clearly and visibly as our firefly friends do, but God in His infinite, loving wisdom meant for us to shine our light in other ways.

Once we have been saved and are living for God, we do have a powerful, wondrous light within us. Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). This light comes out of us as fruits of the Spirit, including goodness, kindness, love, joy, compassion, caring, peace, happiness, and delight (Galatians 5:22-23). This light shines from us whenever we share it, and is more brilliant than a million fireflies.

The Source of the Light
Where does that light originate? God created Adam and Eve in perfection, so the light of God was in them. But when they disobeyed God by eating of the forbidden fruit, that perfect nature was lost. To regain the light, mankind needs someone to bridge the vast gulf between us and God (Genesis 3:1-7).

That bridge is Jesus, the perfect Son of God. Scripture calls Him the Lamb of God, who, just as prescribed in the Old Testament, died as a perfect sacrifice for us. What’s incredible is that He died not just to cover our sins, but to remove them entirely. Because of His sacrifice, we can once again stand clean before God, with intimacy restored between us.

In order for that to happen, however, we must choose to bow our hearts before God, realizing we cannot save ourselves. We need Jesus to be the light that shines out of us since, as a result of our sin, we have no light of our own. In Isaiah 64:6, the Bible says, “All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” Once we have fellowship with God, His Holy Spirit shines out through us, reflecting the love and character of God as long as we are submitted to Him and not going our own way. Those who are completely sold out to God and take up His agenda, living to glorify Him rather than themselves, shine with a holy light that is truly beautiful to behold.

What about you? Do you know Him? Jesus is coming soon, so there’s no time to waste. If you do know Him as your personal Savior, have you submitted your heart so you have no agenda but His?

Hindering the Light

Several things hinder the light from shining through us.

1. Sin. Sin will keep the light of Christ from shining through us so that we are of little use to the kingdom of God. In order to be obedient, we must get into the Word of God and learn what God says, agreeing with God and bowing our hearts in submission.

Now is the time to examine our hearts to see if there is anything standing between us and God. Sin will prevent us from being the light God intended. Ask God to reveal any hidden sin, and He will open your spiritual eyes to see things you’ve never seen before. Confess the sin and let God restore the fellowship He so longs to have with you.

2. Keeping God at a distance. The light will also be hindered if we choose to keep God on the periphery of our lives rather than making Him Lord and the center around which our lives revolve. It’s not about us—it’s all about Jesus.

3. Pain from the past. Pain from the past can also hinder our walk with God, skewing our perceptions and keeping us from truly receiving His love and compassion. He wants to heal our hurts if we will only let go of them, casting them at His feet and asking for His healing touch. Once He touches those terrible scars, we will be able to see clearly, no longer haunted and controlled by the past.

At that point, the light of Christ can shine out through us as we take up God’s agenda, loving Him with all our hearts, souls¬ and minds, with nothing between us.

Nothing Lacking
God has made a way for everything we need if we just ask, believing He will make a way. Jeremiah 32:27 says, “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” We need to choose to trust Him to meet our needs. Our focus must be on Him, loving Him, serving Him, and honoring Him in all we do and say and not demanding our own way.

Our enemy, the Devil, will often whisper lies into our spirits, trying to keep us from believing God. We need to refuse those lies and run to God in confidence, knowing He is faithful and that His tender mercies never fail.

In order for the light to shine through us, we must draw near to God with repentant hearts, fixing our gaze on Him and not on our circumstances. When we meditate on God’s Word in the beauty of holiness, we see with the eyes of our spirit the remarkable goodness of God. Then we are able to rejoice in the amazing things God has done.

Once we are saturated by love and gratitude for God, having let go of our own agendas, the light of Jesus will shine through us like a beacon from a lighthouse. That light will reflect in our gentle smiles when we share a kind word, listen with a caring heart, and encourage those around us.

Remember, you may be the only Bible some people ever read. So allow your love for Jesus and for others to be visible as you glorify God in all you do and say. Then the glory of the Lord shining through you will change someone’s life forever.
